Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening gel is applied to a custom-fitting whitening tray. Once applied, the whitening gel (which is peroxide-based) breaks the stain molecules within the enamel down, revealing a white and natural shade.

The number of days it takes to achieve your desired shade will depend on:

• How stained your teeth are to begin with.
• How white would you like your teeth to become.

• Make sure your whitening trays are dry before applying the gel.
• Apply a small pea-sized amount of gel to each of the grooves in the whitening tray.
• Place the whitening trays in your mouth, making sure to fit each tooth into each individual groove (this should be easy as the trays are custom-made for your mouth).
• Press down on the trays with your fingers to set them firmly in place.
• Remove any excess gel with a clean tissue.
• Wear the trays for 30 minutes each day, then rinse them with water and place them back into their case.
• Stow the whitening trays away in their whitening case.

A short-term side effect of teeth whitening can be some minor tooth sensitivity. If this is the case, you can take a break of 1-3 days using your whitening trays and resume once the sensitivity has faded. Your dentist can also provide a toothpaste formulated for tooth sensitivity to improve your comfort.

The effects of whitening can last for several years with the proper care. You can ensure the results endure by:

• Limiting your intake of tea, coffee, curries and red wine.
• Caring for your teeth by observing good oral care.
• Visiting the dentist and hygienist for routine check-ups.
