Root canal treatment

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) is a procedure to remove infection from the inside of a tooth – the dental pulp – often caused by deep decay, old fillings, cracks, or trauma. Left untreated, this infection can cause severe pain, swelling, or even lead to tooth loss.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the signs that a root canal is needed?

  • Persistent or severe toothache.
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers.
  • Swollen or tender gums near the tooth.
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth.
  • A loose or wobbly tooth.
  • Unpleasant taste or persistent bad breath.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, book a prompt assessment – early treatment can save your tooth and prevent complications.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Root canal treatment has a reputation for being uncomfortable, but with modern techniques and advanced anaesthesia, the procedure itself should not be painful. At Marton Dental Practice, your comfort is our top priority – your tooth and surrounding area will be fully numbed before we begin, so you shouldn’t feel any pain during the treatment. Most patients describe the experience as no more uncomfortable than having a routine filling.

After the procedure, it’s normal to have some tenderness or mild discomfort as your tooth heals, but this can usually be managed easily with over-the-counter pain relief. Our team will provide you with clear aftercare instructions and will always be available if you have any concerns during your recovery.

Is extraction a good alternative?

Preserving your natural tooth is always our priority. Extraction is only considered when a tooth cannot be saved or has repeated infections. Keeping your own tooth helps maintain your bite, jawbone, and smile aesthetics – avoiding the need for more complex and costly replacements like bridges or implants.

What can I expect during root canal treatment?

  • Diagnosis and planning: We’ll use digital X-rays and advanced diagnostics to confirm if root canal treatment is needed and develop a precise plan.
  • Gentle, local anaesthesia: The tooth and surrounding area are fully numbed so you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.
  • Cleaning and disinfection: Using specialist instruments and a dental microscope, we carefully remove all infected tissue from the root canals, then thoroughly clean and disinfect the space.
  • Sealing and restoration: The root canals are sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection. In many cases, a crown is recommended to restore strength and function.
  • Follow-up and aftercare: We’ll guide you on caring for your treated tooth and schedule a review to ensure excellent healing and long-term success.

How can I prevent the need for root canal treatment?

  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene – brush and floss daily, and use mouthwash.
  • Attend regular dental and hygienist check-ups.
  • Protect your teeth from injury – wear a mouthguard for contact sports or if you grind your teeth.
  • Reduce your intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
  • Address dental issues early, before they become more serious.

What is your process for aftercare and recovery?

It’s normal to experience some tenderness as the anaesthetic wears off. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually sufficient, and we’ll provide clear aftercare instructions. Our team is always on hand for advice or reassurance as you heal.

Treatment Timeline

Step 1

Consultation/examination

Your dentist will examine the problem teeth and identify if the infection has spread to other areas of the mouth. We use high-spec loupes, digital X-rays, microscopes and digital technology to pinpoint even the smallest cavities that could be creating a vessel through which infection can pass inside the tooth (in other words, we leave no stone unturned!).

During this appointment, we will provide you with our prediction of how successful treatment is likely to be. We will also offer an itemised treatment plan with all the costs involved, so you can make an informed decision on how you wish to proceed.

Step 2

Nursing your tooth

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout the cleaning process. Your dentist will clean the root canals of any infected matter, using a thorough guided process.

The tooth is filled using a rubber material that will help to prevent reinfection.

Step 3

Restoring your tooth

A filling or crown is used to strengthen the tooth and to improve its appearance.
