Managing gum disease in Middlesbrough and Teesside.

Gum disease is one of the most common – and often overlooked – oral health problems in the UK. At Marton Dental Practice, we’re committed to helping patients across Middlesbrough and Teesside prevent, detect, and manage gum disease at every stage.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects the tissues that support your teeth. It often develops silently, with many people unaware of its presence in the early stages. That’s why regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments are so important – our experienced team can spot the subtle signs of gum disease before they progress. If left untreated, gum disease can cause more serious issues such as gum recession, persistent infection, and even tooth loss. Early intervention is key to protecting your smile.

What causes gum disease?

The primary cause of gum disease is the build-up of plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – around the teeth and gums. Plaque can be especially difficult to remove from hard-to-clean areas, such as around dental work, braces, or dentures. Other risk factors include:

  • Smoking or tobacco use.
  • Diabetes or other conditions affecting your immune system.
  • Poor oral hygiene habits.

Our team at Marton Dental Practice, serving Middlesbrough and Teesside, can help you manage these risks and keep your gums healthy.

Gum disease can be mild and easy to miss, but there are several warning signs to look out for:

  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing.
  • Persistent bad breath.
  • Loose or shifting teeth.
  • Receding gums (teeth appearing longer).
  • Gum abscesses or swelling.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to book an appointment as soon as possible.

Long-term management: dental plans for ongoing gum health

It’s important to understand that gum disease is typically a slow, chronic condition. For many people, it can be present for years or even a lifetime, requiring ongoing attention and care to keep it under control. That’s why we offer tailored Dental Plans designed to support long-term gum health. Our plans include regular hygiene appointments, professional monitoring, and personalised advice – helping you stay on top of your gum health and reduce the risk of future problems.

By joining one of our dental plans, you can take a proactive approach to managing gum disease and maintaining a healthy mouth for life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can gum disease be treated?

Mild gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed with a consistent, thorough oral hygiene routine at home – brushing twice daily, flossing, and cleaning your tongue. For more advanced cases, professional care is essential. At Marton Dental Practice, we offer:

  • Regular hygiene treatments to remove plaque and tartar, even from hard-to-reach areas.
  • Personalised advice on improving your at-home oral care.
  • Monitoring and support during your routine dental check-ups.
  • Deep cleaning and advanced treatments for more severe gum disease.

Lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and managing underlying health conditions, can also make a significant difference in preventing and controlling gum disease.

Is treatment painful?

It’s not uncommon to experience a bit of tenderness in the early stage of treatment. We offer pain management techniques to aid in alleviating this, including carefully administered local anaesthetics. As gum disease begins to resolve, treatment and prevention can become virtually painless.

Gum disease progresses slowly, but it can also take several months to stabilise your condition. We recommend a review with the hygienist every 3 months during the early stages of recovery; it can sometimes take 9-12 months to recover from gum disease fully.

We offer an Oral Hygiene plan that covers the complete costs of gum disease, irrespective of how often you need to see a hygienist, as well as regular dental check-ups. This is an excellent option for:

  • Patients with high risk factors for gum disease.
  • Patients recovering from gum disease.

How do I prevent gum disease?

The best approach is prevention. Regular visits to our dental hygienist and dentist allow us to monitor your gum health and provide early treatment when needed. We welcome patients from across Teesside and Middlesbrough, and we’re here to support you at every stage of your oral health journey.

What happens if I leave gum disease untreated?

Whilst you might not notice any debilitating symptoms right away after a diagnosis of gum disease, it can cause highly unpleasant and life-changing issues, including:

  • Loose teeth and tooth loss, as a result of your gums eroding.
  • Loss of bone in the jaw – gum disease destroys the supporting jawbone underneath your gum.
  • Gum recession – the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, leaving pockets in your gum line.
  • Arterial plaque – once there are pockets in your gum line, plaque can reach the bloodstream and increase your heart disease risk.

We strongly recommend going ahead with treatment as early as you feel ready to, as prevention is significantly easier than cure when it comes to delicate soft tissues like your gums.
