Dr Omar Mahmood

Principal Dentist

BDS (N’cle) | MJDF (RCS eng) | MSc Rest Dent (Manc) | Dip Oral Surg (RCS Eng) | Dip Endod (Chester) GDC Number: 228687

Omar has been working at Marton Dental Practice for some years and recently joined in the ownership of the practice.

After qualifying, he gained experience working in a range of different practices around the Teesside area before eventually joining Marton Dental Practice full-time. He grew up and lives in the local Nunthorpe and Marton area. He even attended the primary school next door to the practice.

He is committed to continuing the development of his skills to reach and maintain a high level of clinical excellence in his dentistry. As part of this commitment, Omar is currently enrolled in a masters degree in restorative and aesthetic dentistry from the University of Manchester. This has allowed him to increase the scope of his practice and skills, all with the aim of ensuring he provides exceptional care for his patients.

He has sat and passed a postgraduate qualification at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and is a member of the Joint Dental Faculties. This has furthered his knowledge in all areas of dentistry. He has gained an advanced certificate in facilitating teaching and learning in healthcare practice from the University of Central Lancashire, passing with merit, which led to him becoming a trainer and mentor for younger dentists after they have qualified.

He is enrolled in a postgraduate diploma program in primary care oral surgery, allowing him to provide his patients with more advanced treatments. He is also currently in training to become a certified Six Month Smile provider, which will allow him to offer short-term braces treatment to correct small misalignments in teeth.

Outside of dentistry, Omar enjoys watching and playing most sports and really enjoys going karting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should I get a check-up?

At Marton Dental Practice, regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining good oral health. While the exact frequency may vary depending on individual needs, routine dentist and hygienist visits are part of your preventive armour against dental infections and gum disease. For most people, check-ups are recommended every 6 months, though patients at higher risk may be advised to come in more frequently.

Why are my teeth sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Dental infections or decay reaching the inner layers of the tooth.
  • Gum recession exposing the tooth’s dentine (a weaker layer than enamel).
  • Cracked or chipped teeth.
  • Worn fillings or enamel erosion.

If you’re experiencing sensitivity, it could also be a sign of underlying gum disease or the early stages of a dental infection that may require attention, such as a root canal treatment if left untreated.

How do I whiten my teeth?

Marton Dental Practice offers professional at-home teeth whitening using White Dental Beauty products. This treatment involves:

  • Custom-made whitening trays based on 3D digital scans.
  • Dentist-supervised application of a safe, vegan-friendly whitening gel.
  • Wear time as short as 30 minutes per day.

The process is non-invasive, gentle on sensitive teeth, and results can last for years with good maintenance.

Why are my gums bleeding?

Bleeding gums are often a sign of gum disease, caused by the build-up of plaque and tartar. If left untreated, this can progress to serious gum damage, tooth loss, and even systemic health issues like cardiovascular disease.

Marton Dental’s hygienists offer:

  • Scale and polish treatments to remove plaque.
  • Deep cleaning below the gumline to close gum pockets.
  • Tailored advice for ongoing gum maintenance.

Early treatment can reverse gum disease and prevent more invasive procedures later.
