Invisalign® treatment timeline

Step 1

Free consultation

We offer free consultations with our Treatment Coordinator, who will listen to your expectations of treatment and assess whether you are suitable. She will also take you through the costs involved and take a 3D scan of your teeth to determine your suitability. A simulation of your smile is created, so you can see what you can expect your teeth to look like once treatment is complete.

Step 2

Comprehensive consultation

If you are suitable for treatment and happy with the simulation, we can book you in with the dentist for a comprehensive dental assessment to ensure healthy teeth and gums before starting. We will then outline further details about the treatment and an exact summary of how long your treatment will take.

Step 3

Design and preparation

Your scans are sent away to Invisalign® for your bespoke smile to be designed between your Invisalign® dentist and Invisalign® technician. Once designed, we will share this with you for approval prior to the aligners being ordered!

Step 4

Start your teeth straightening (the fun bit!)

At this stage, you’re ready to start with the aligners, which is when you’ll get to see weekly progress. You will change your aligners each week, picking up the next one in the sequence. We will ask you to attend roughly every 4-8 weeks to monitor your progress, but we also offer a scan box that allows your dentist to monitor your progress from home, reducing the risk of issues.

Step 5

Composite bonding

Our most popular Invisalign® packages include composite bonding as part of the treatment. It is at this stage that this will be carefully completed by hand, to how you desire.

Step 6

Completion/Wearing your retainer

Well done! Your teeth have reached their final position, and you’re ready to start wearing your retainer to keep your teeth from moving out of position. We will give you a set of easy-to-follow aftercare instructions, but please do not hesitate to contact us if you’re unsure about anything once you finish your treatment.

If you have opted for composite bonding as part of a bespoke Smile Makeover package, we can begin planning your treatment on completion of Invisalign®.

What can Invisalign® fix?

Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth are a condition where you do not have enough room for your teeth to fit normally. This can cause plaque or tartar and other harmful bacteria to build up as it is harder for you to brush and floss well.

Gaps between teeth

Gaps between teeth

Gaps between teeth are when there is extra space between two or more of your teeth. This can cause pockets between your teeth and gums and food to get stuck, making them tender and sore. This might also lead to gum disease.

Open bite

Open bite

An open bite is when your upper and lower teeth don't touch when you close your mouth. An open bite can make it hard for you to chew or difficult to bite even the most common of foods like apples.

Underbite

Underbite

An underbite is when you close your mouth, and your lower front teeth are in front of your upper teeth. In many cases, this is actually a problem with your lower jaw being too far forward. An underbite can make it hard to chew properly and speak clearly, and it might cause your teeth to wear down more quickly.

Overbite

Overbite

An overbite is when your upper front teeth overlap with your lower front teeth. Most people have at least a little overbite. When your overbite is too large, your doctor might tell you you have a deep bite. This can cause problems, from your teeth wearing down to pain in your jaw.

Crossbite

Crossbite

A crossbite is when you close your mouth, and yet some of your upper teeth sit inside your lower teeth rather than on the outside. A crossbite can make your teeth wear down or chip. It can also make your gums start to recede or make little notches above your gum line. This kind of damage can lead to painful gum problems or even bone loss.

FAQs

1. Why choose Marton Dental for Invisalign®?

We are an Invisalign® provider in the Teesside area. Marton Dental’s Dr Omar Mahmood has provided hundreds of patients with a 5* experience of Invisalign®, and holds a Master’s degree in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry from the University of Manchester.

Our practice is a relaxing environment – we genuinely want people to feel like coming to the dentist can (and should) be a therapeutic and restorative experience. Each time you come in for your Invisalign® check-up, we promise to make your experience a positive (and even enjoyable!) one.

Something that sets us apart from our neighbouring practices is our bespoke Smile Packages, which include composite bonding. When planning your Invisalign® treatment, we will also map out how the composite bonding process will be used to alter the shape and size of each of your newly-straightened teeth (rather than considering the composite element after Invisalign® has straightened your teeth). This method gives you symmetrical and natural-looking tooth alignment. The composite bonding element of your treatment will be planned based on how your chin, lips, nose and face shape are balanced, enhancing your natural beauty.

We offer three packages – Basic, Enhance, and Rejuvenate. You can read more about these here.

2. How long does Invisalign® take?

The average treatment time with Invisalign® is between 6 and 9 months, whilst more complex cases can take between 12 and 15 months.

Treatment time can also be prolonged if the aligners aren’t worn for the correct number of hours each day.

3. Is treatment permanent?

Yes, as long as you wear your retainers for life.

Without a retainer, your teeth will move out of position. Conditions such as gum disease and tooth wear can also cause teeth to shift over time.

To maintain the results of Invisalign® for as long as possible (and these do have the potential to be permanent), you should:

  • Avoid gum disease by attending hygienist appointments and caring for your oral health.
  • Wear your retainer (without fail!).

If you have had composite bonding treatment following Invisalign®, there will also be maintenance required for this.

4. How does Invisalign® move my teeth?

Invisalign® exerts a pushing action on the ligaments connecting each tooth’s roots to each socket. The forces stretch the ligaments on a single side of the tooth’s roots, which compresses the ligaments on the opposing side. This movement occurs gradually over months and exerts virtually no discomfort (if any) on your teeth along the way.

5. Is Invisalign® better than braces?

There is no clinical black or white answer to this question, as it depends on several factors, including (arguably most importantly), your own personal conditions during treatment.

Much of Invisalign®‘s inception was to fill the gap in the market as a pro-lifestyle teeth straightening method for adults. If you’re someone who doesn’t want to change their diet or brushing routine, and you don’t want others to know you’re having your teeth straightened, Invisalign® could be a great option.

However, there are limitations to what Invisalign® can achieve. Severe cases of misaligned teeth, gaps in teeth, crowded teeth and underbites/overbites/crossbites are generally not treatable with Invisalign.

6. Can anyone get Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is suitable for patients who:

  • Have all of their adult teeth.
  • Do not have moderate or severe gum disease or tooth decay present (treatment of these conditions must be carried out before Invisalign®).
  • Do not mind the degree of responsibility that comes with Invisalign® (you must remember to wear them for 22 hours each day).
  • May have been put off by metal braces in the past and would like a lifestyle-friendly alternative.

7. How soon will I see results?

This depends on several factors, including:

  • Complexity: how your teeth were sitting in your mouth when you started treatment.
  • Maintenance: How often you wear your aligners will determine how quickly you see results. Patients who stick to the 20-22 hour wear-time each day will see the results predicted by the ClinCheck® software at the start of treatment.

If you have noticed results, this isn’t a reason to suddenly stop using your aligners as often, or to take a break. Just like when you are prescribed antibiotics and given a set number of days to take them, you should observe the same principles with Invisalign®.

8. Is my Invisalign 3D scan free?

Yes. All of the scans included as part of your treatment are free.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should I get a check-up?

At Marton Dental Practice, regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining good oral health. While the exact frequency may vary depending on individual needs, routine dentist and hygienist visits are part of your preventive armour against dental infections and gum disease. For most people, check-ups are recommended every 6 months, though patients at higher risk may be advised to come in more frequently.

Why are my teeth sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Dental infections or decay reaching the inner layers of the tooth.
  • Gum recession exposing the tooth’s dentine (a weaker layer than enamel).
  • Cracked or chipped teeth.
  • Worn fillings or enamel erosion.

If you’re experiencing sensitivity, it could also be a sign of underlying gum disease or the early stages of a dental infection that may require attention, such as a root canal treatment if left untreated.

How do I whiten my teeth?

Marton Dental Practice offers professional at-home teeth whitening using White Dental Beauty products. This treatment involves:

  • Custom-made whitening trays based on 3D digital scans.
  • Dentist-supervised application of a safe, vegan-friendly whitening gel.
  • Wear time as short as 30 minutes per day.

The process is non-invasive, gentle on sensitive teeth, and results can last for years with good maintenance.

Why are my gums bleeding?

Bleeding gums are often a sign of gum disease, caused by the build-up of plaque and tartar. If left untreated, this can progress to serious gum damage, tooth loss, and even systemic health issues like cardiovascular disease.

Marton Dental’s hygienists offer:

  • Scale and polish treatments to remove plaque.
  • Deep cleaning below the gumline to close gum pockets.
  • Tailored advice for ongoing gum maintenance.

Early treatment can reverse gum disease and prevent more invasive procedures later.
